    Practical Living — France

Year-round viability, internet connectivity, healthcare access, and what 'needs renovation' really means in rural France.

    Updated February 2026

    France

France's Plan France Très Haut Débit (PFTHD) aims to bring fibre broadband to every household by 2025. Progress has been significant but coverage is uneven, particularly for isolated rural properties.

How to check coverage for a specific address

Use the official government tool: monreseaumobile.fr (for mobile coverage) and lafibre.info (for fibre availability by address — crowdsourced, very accurate).

    Connectivity tiers in rural France

Fibre (FTTH)Symmetric speeds of 200–1,000 Mbps. Available in most communes with >500 inhabitants in most départements. Check the RIP (Réseau d'Initiative Publique) map for your département.
ADSL/VDSLAvailable almost everywhere. Speeds of 5–40 Mbps depending on distance from the exchange. Adequate for most uses but not suitable for video production or large file transfers.
4G box (Livebox/SFR Box via 4G)Available where mobile 4G coverage exists. Typical speeds 20–100 Mbps. Requires good outdoor signal

a problem in valleys or areas with hills.

Starlink satelliteAvailable across all of France. Speeds typically 80–200 Mbps, latency ~20–60ms. Costs approximately €50/month + equipment. Reliable solution for very isolated properties where other options are poor.

    Practical advice for buyers

If internet quality matters for your use (remote working, video streaming), always check the specific address using lafibre.info and ask the vendor or neighbours for their current provider and speeds before making an offer.
